Today’s startup gives us the opportunity to talk with a non-profit company whose goal is to give back to the places we visit.  Normally giving back is not something thought of when sitting at the beach or hiking; but for each local shop, there are companies moving in that are trying to make a profit from tourists.

Luc Robinson and Yannick Pichler of Leave a Trace want to help people realize where their money goes and how they can give back to the people and families of the places they are visiting.  We learn while talking with Luc that it does not take much for the everyday user to donate, but adding one extra click and educating users is not as easy as it sounds.

Leave a Trace

The concept of Leave a Trace is simple.  If you are planning on booking a vacation, start your search at their website and click any of the providers that have referral commissions.  These include your everyday travel sites such as Priceline, Expedia, Booking and many more.  You book your trip as you normally would (at no extra cost) and Leave a Trace would receive the referral fee for your trip.  This money is then donated to a charity in the region that you want to support.

Each month Leave a Trace holds a poll that allows users to vote on which charities will be the recipient of the donations.  It’s a great touch as it gives users a chance to choose where a difference can get made and ensure that the site is not in full control of where money is going.

At this time, 100% of the profits are donated and Luc and Yannick plan to keep it that way.  On the podcast, the question came up as to how the two co-founders plan to keep the site running without making any profit.  Leave a Trace has a strategy to enter the merchandise game (think TOMS) as well as work with corporations on planning corporate trips.  While at first I was skeptical about the long game for the company, if implemented properly; merchandise can be a game changer for Leave a Trace.

Listen to the podcast to learn more about the company and how you can make a difference by starting your travel booking process at www.leaveatrace.co.  It is one additional click, but it can make a world of difference!
